The first COVID-19 Testing Facility has been opened in Cairns to try and prevent the spread of the virus. This is one of 100 Australian Government-funded GP-led respiratory clinics which aims to support local GP’s whose patients require further assessment and testing for Coronavirus.

The clinic will run from SmartClinics Woree Family Medical Centre located in the Calanna Corner, Woree, and will assess, test and diagnose those who are experiencing mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms. These include fever, shortness of breath, cough, sore throat and/or fatigue. People of any age can be tested, including babies, and the results will be sent to your usual GP. Testing and assessments will not cost patients anything, as the clinics are being run in an effort to keep the community as safe as possible. If a positive test result is the outcome then a referral to the local Public Health Unit will be given.

Dr Kate Brennan from SmartClinics Woree Family Medical Centre says, “We are here to clinically examine and assess the patient face to face for their regular GP. We all want our patients, staff, and community general practice to stay safe.”

“Patients will also be provided initial advice for any condition diagnosed during the appointment, after which ongoing care will transition back to their regular GP.”

For extra safety, you can download the COVIDSafe app which will quickly alert you if you may have been exposed to someone with the virus.
